20th Century African "Pillow Amber" 'Phenolic Resin' Necklace
About the Item
“African amber” (phenolic resin) necklace by unknown designer
This striking necklace is made with smooth old African "pillow amber" beads, which were made in Germany of phenolic resin and traded in Africa in the early 20th century. These beads were often worn as hair ornaments by women in Mali and Mauritania.
They have been artfully strung on crown-knotted nylon, along with some "burnt" amber beads, by an unknown Bay Area jewelry designer. The inner circumference measures 28 inches (71 cm), and the largest bead is 2 inches wide. The entire necklace weighs 256 grams.
